Obama Says He Can Fix Economic Crisis, But Process Will Take Time
President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday that he believes he can fix the dire economic situation the country is facing, though the process will take some time.
Obama also suggested that breaking the deadlock in the conflict in Gaza will be a key foreign policy goal of his early presidency and said that he may not be able to close the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within his first 100 days in office.
“I think we can fix this,” Obama said of the economic crisis, speaking in an interview on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” according to a transcript.
“But it’s going to take some time,” the president-elect added. “It’s not going to happen overnight.”
Obama repeated that he is willing to hear ideas from all sides in building an stimulus package, but said it must be passed quickly and not be packed with pork.
“We can’t set up a situation where we’re adding to the structural deficit over the long-term,” Obama said. “We can’t have waste and abuse in it. We can’t have earmarks in it.”
He added that he will be respectful of congressional debate, but wants to have a package ready by President’s Day in mid-February.
