Wow! As you may have heard, Sarah Palin is now calling for Rahm Emanuel to be fired because of a report based on anonymous sources claiming he privately told top liberals last summer that they were “fucking retarded.”

Palin professed outrage over Rahm’s use of “retarded,” writing: “Rahm’s slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities — and the people who love them — is unacceptable.”

Check out the White House’s immediate response:

A White House official emails that Rahm Emanuel has acknowledged calling liberal Democrats “retarded” and apologized for the remark.

“Rahm called Tim Shriver Wednesday to apologize and the apology was accepted,” the official said.

Shriver is the Chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics, which has launched a campaign against what it calls “the R word.”

What makes this even more absurd is that Rahm, to my knowledge, has never once apologized to liberals for calling them retarded. But now that Palin has attacked, Rahm is suddenly apologizing to Shriver!

So absurd.

Update: In fairness, a White House official emails me that Rahm apologized to Shriver last Wednesday, so it may not have been prompted by Palin’s attack. I’ve changed the hed to reflect that. Still, no apology to liberals that I’m aware of.
