Senator Boxer Requests That She Not Be Called MA’AM!!!
-
While speaking at the Senate Environmental and Public Works committee, Brigadier General Michael Walsh made the mistake of calling Senator Barbara Boxer (Democrat from California) “ma’am”. While this action is often considered a sign of respect, Mrs. Boxer did not share this opinion. She harped back with, “You know, do me a favor. Could you call me Senator instead of ma’am? It’s just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title, so I’d appreciate it. Yes, thank you.”
It is true that Mrs. Boxer worked for her position, she was voted in by her constituents, but so did Brigadier General
Michael Walsh. I doubt that Mrs. Boxer’s job could potentially place her in the way of a gun on a regular basis. Regardless of whether one believes in war or not, it is undeniable that we as a nation must have the utmost respect for our men and women in uniform. This was not done in the words chosen by Mrs. Boxer and the way she spoke to Gen Walsh. If Boxer had called Gen Walsh “sir”, I would be surprised if Gen Walsh would have been so rude as to correct her at all.I understand that many people feel that calling a professional woman “ma’am” is intended to undermine their position in the professional world. This was obviously not the case when Gen Walsh called Mrs. Boxer “ma’am”, but instead an attempt to speak to Mrs. Boxer in a professional, respectful manner. Mrs. Boxer should be more vigilant in deciding who she feels is trying to be insulting and who is trying to be polite.
My sister recently followed in my father’s footsteps and joined the United States Army. Just today, she was at the airport in her uniform going back home from over four months of training in the middle of hot, buggy Missouri where she learned how to protect this country. She had a long wait between when the military bus dropped her off and when her plane took off, so she decided to purchase a drink at the food court. The cashier asked her if she would like anything to eat, and my sister said that she didn’t. A group of people sitting at a table near her piped up and told her to order anything she wanted, that it was on them. Mrs. Boxer should take a page from these guys’ book. While it is unnecessary for people to go this far, and treatment for the military has gotten much better from the time my father spoke of during the Vietnam war where soldier’s were rewarded with being spit on rather than a drink, it isn’t good enough when the very people who go to war when politicians decide or who have their funding (or underfunding) decided by politicians, are treated as if they were schoolchildren by those same politicians. I’ve got a novel idea- let’s at least treat soldier’s with the respect we give the politicians, who wouldn’t dare put their own lives (or even livelihoods) on the line for us, as soldier’s put uniforms on to do every day. Or how about Mrs. Boxer, and all politicians, crawl down from their thrones and treat their constituents who awarded them with a vote with a little respect. I think it is the least they can do for what we as Americans, especially those that are in uniform, have done for them.Other Junk You Might Like!

HAT TIP – http://www.politicsdaily.com/2009/06/17/please-call-me-senator/
At a sometimes contentious Capitol Hill hearing Tuesday, Senate Environment and Public Works Committee chairwoman, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), had a request for Army Corps of Engineers division leader, Brigadier General Michael Walsh.
During a terse exchange, as Boxer pressed Walsh on why the levees in New Orleans are still not repaired nearly four years after Hurricane Katrina, she said to Walsh:
“Could you say ‘senator’ instead of ‘ma’am? It’s just a thing. I worked so hard to get that title. I’d appreciate it.”
The general’s response? “Yes, Senator.”
The blogosphere exploded with reaction following the senator’s comments,

WAS SHE PUTTING HIM IN HIS PLACE? YOU WORKS FOR WHOM?
Boxer was grilling a witness who wasn’t coughing up the answers she wanted. So, she used a trick familiar to anyone who questions people for a living. She reminded the general who he was talking to. She made him stop and do it her way. These little power games are a simple but effective way to shift the momentum of a conversation
She found a chance to dress down a general on camera and she took it.

My Answer to her statement would’ve been a loud “Yes Ma’am” just to look like a bigger asshole
