Hillary Clinton is sworn in as U.S. Secretary of State.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was publicly sworn-in to her new post and the former first lady said she was taking up the challenging responsibility at a “real hinge of history.” Watched by her husband and former president Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea, Hillary(61) was administered the oath of office by Vice President Joe Biden at a star-studded gathering at the State Department.Like President Barack Obama, Hillary was sworn in as his chief diplomat for the second time. Clinton was earlier sworn-in privately on January 22 shortly after she won a Senate confirmation.
Several of Hillary’s predecessors including Madeline Albright, James Baker and Henry Kissinger were present at the ceremony which was also attended by Indian-American businessman Sant Singh Chatwal, a close friend of the Clintons. She is the 67th Secretary of State. Hillary replaces Condoleezza Rice of the previous Bush Administration.
In her speech, Hillary reiterated her use of “Smart Power” as a key tool of the US foreign policy under Obama Administration.
“We have, in the leadership of President (Barack) Obama, someone who wants us to reach out to the world, to do so without illusions, understanding that the difficulties we face will not be wished away, but meeting them forthrightly and smartly, and that we want to seize the opportunities that exist as well,” she said.
“This ceremony takes place at a real hinge of history time, there is so much that lies ahead in terms of challenges, but also opportunities,” she added.
Biden said he is confident that with Clinton as Secretary of State, the Obama Administration would be able to achieve its foreign policy goals in challenging times.
