Bill Clinton Gets A Hard-On For Hillary

Former president Bill Clinton has agreed to several concessions requested by President-elect Barack Obama’s transition lawyers that could pave the way for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) to become the next secretary of state, including making public all donors to his foundation and clearing all of his future speeches and charitable activities with Obama administration officials, according to a Democratic source with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

But there continued to be some dispute about whether the job had been formally offered to Hillary Clinton. Although Obama did not formally offer her the position, aides to the president-elect said Wednesday, they said that it would be difficult for Clinton to now walk away from the secretary of state post. The aides said Obama’s staff has gone down the path of thoroughly vetting her and her husband with the understanding that, if he should make an official job offer, she would accept it. Another candidate for the post, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, emerged from his meeting with Obama last Friday under the impression that the job had not been filled, people familiar with that meeting said.

Clinton is mulling whether to take the post with her husband and close advisers, the source said, noting that becoming the nation’s top diplomat would be a major and career-changing decision for the former first lady. Of particular concern is how much influence Clinton would have in Obama’s White House, where she would compete for attention with other top foreign policy and national security advisers, said a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to speak candidly about the negotiations.

Wall Street is back in freak-out mode today: Stocks are plummeting, led by financial issues, and money is rushing into the haven of Treasury securities.

With about 90 minutes to go in the trading day, anything can (and probably will) happen. Stocks also were down sharply at midday on Tuesday, only to rebound.

But the market is in worse shape today than it was on Tuesday. Many major stock indexes are at new bear-market lows. People are giving up — again.

“The market isn’t trading on the fundamentals or on technicals. It’s fear-based,” said Joe Saluzzi, a partner at Themis Trading in Chatham, N.J.

Fear of what? All the usual suspects: the economy, the financial system, the potential bankruptcy of major automakers, a massive wave of bond defaults, etc.

Campaign Expected To Use Internet For Unprecedented Communications Outreach, Circumventing Mainstream Media

Obama Set To Be 1st "Wired" President

Armed with millions of e-mail addresses and a political operation that harnessed the Internet like no campaign before it, Barack Obama will enter the White House with the opportunity to create the first truly “wired” presidency.

Obama aides and allies are preparing a major expansion of the White House communications operation, enabling them to reach out directly to the supporters they have collected over 21 months without having to go through the mainstream media.

Just as John F. Kennedy mastered television as a medium for taking his message to the public, Obama is poised to transform the art of political communication once again, said Joe Trippi, a Democratic strategist who first helped integrate the Internet into campaigning four years ago.

“He’s going to be the first president to be connected in this way, directly, with millions of Americans,” Trippi said.

The nucleus of that effort is an e-mail database of more than 10 million supporters. The list is considered so valuable that the Obama camp briefly offered it as collateral during a cash-flow crunch late in the campaign, though it wound up never needing the loan, senior aides said. At least 3.1 million people on the list donated money to Obama.

Millions more made up the volunteer corps that organized his enormous rallies, registered millions of voters and held countless gatherings to plug the senator to friends and neighbors. On Election Day, they served as the backbone of Obama’s get-out-the-vote operation, reaching voters by phone and at the front door, serving coffee at polling stations and babysitting so parents could stand in line at voting precincts.

After Obama declared victory, his campaign sent a text message announcing that his supporters hadn’t heard the last from the president-elect. Obama conveyed a similar message to his staff in a campaignwide conference call Wednesday, signaling that his election was the beginning, and not the culmination, of a political movement.

Accordingly, the president-elect’s http://www.change.gov transition Web site features a blog and a suggestion form, signaling the kinds of direct and instantaneous interaction that the Obama administration will encourage, perhaps with an eye toward turning its following into the biggest special-interest group in Washington.

Once Obama is sworn in, those backers may be summoned to push reluctant members of Congress to support legislation, to offer feedback on initiatives and to enlist in administration-supported causes in local communities. Obama would also be positioned to ask his supporters to back his favored candidates with fundraising and turnout support in the 2010 midterm elections.

“There’s this network of people now,” said Martha Page, a neighborhood leader in Warren County, outside Cincinnati, where Obama managed to reduce a traditionally large Republican vote margin. Page received six calls Wednesday from volunteers looking for new assignments. “It’s a sea change,” she said.

People in technology circles have been musing for months about how Obama would use his list, said Peter Daou, who oversaw Internet operations for the Senate campaign of Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.). “Once you have people connected through a network, you can’t disconnect. It’s like unbreaking an egg. People all across the country have formed these groups to support Obama. They’ve worked together for a successful purpose,” Daou said. “You don’t let go of that easily.”

But Daou noted that the initiative could have a downside. Obama faced an intense backlash when he broke from the left on the issue of immunity for telecommunications companies that took part in the warrantless wiretapping program. “People who have helped you reach this historic goal by self-organizing can also organize in opposition to your policies,” he said.

As part of the presidential transition, Obama officials are looking to add a significant “new media” component to the White House communications operation. The campaign employed 95 people in its Internet operation, building a user-friendly Web site that served as a platform for grass-roots activities and distributed statements, policy positions and footage of Obama events. The White House Web operation will follow a similar but probably more ambitious path, transition officials said.

The process is just beginning, and many questions remain unanswered. The simplest approach might be to convert the campaign organization into an incarnation aimed at 2012 and an anticipated run for reelection, but some inside the Obama team are concerned about appearing too overtly political. Another course could be to create a nonprofit organization. Obama officials said all options would be examined over the coming weeks.

Over the course of the campaign, Obama’s e-mail list gathered not only names and contact information, but also details about issues important to those supporters.
In past years, such lists were considered useful tools for political campaigns but not particularly helpful for governing. But Peter Greenberger, manager of political advertising for Google, said such information could be a boon for Obama in building public support for policy proposals.

The White House could “geo-target” ads so they appear online in congressional districts where members remain undecided. Obama could use Internet ads to solicit signatures for petitions, or he could place display and video ads contextually — so they would appear on the screen next to news coverage of his proposals.

“If there’s an article in the New York Times or The Washington Post about health-care legislation,” Greenberger said, “the administration or a pro-Obama advocacy organization could run an ad right alongside it.”

Republicans have also seen the potential value in organizing online. In recent days, a small group of prominent young Republicans launched a Web site, http://www.rebuildtheparty.com, calling on their party’s next chairman to use the Internet to organize and galvanize their grass roots.

“Online organizing is by far the most efficient way to transform our party structures to be able to compete against what is likely to be a $1 billion Obama re-election campaign in 2012,” the Web site says.

Reverend Jim Jones

THIRTY YEARS AGO, 909 Americans were led to their death by the Reverend Jim Jones in a mass murder-suicide pact in a South American jungle, shortly after Jones’ gunmen killed a visiting United States congressman and four others at a nearby airstrip.

One-third of the victims were children. Many were killed by Jones’ aides, who squirted cyanide down their throats.

Of the nearly 1 000 church members who began the day in Jonestown, a cult commune, only 33 survived to see the next day.

THE KEY to understanding the tragedy that was Jonestown lies in the oratory skills of the People’s Temple founder Jim Jones.

“He was very charismatic,” Leslie Wagner-Wilson, a Jonestown survivor, said of the Rev. Jim Jones.

With the cadence and fervour of a Baptist preacher, the charm and folksiness of a country storyteller and the zeal and fury of a maniacal dictator, Jones exhorted his followers to a fever pitch, audiotapes recovered from Jonestown reveal.

As he spoke, they applauded, shouted, cheered. One follower who survived the “revolutionary suicide” at Jonestown on November 18, 1978, said Jones was the most dynamic speaker he had ever heard.

Like all powerful speakers, Jones’ greatest asset was his ability to determine what listeners wanted to hear and give it to them in simple language that appealed to them on an almost instinctual level.

Wagner-Wilson said Jones could quote scriptures and preach socialism.

Many of his followers were elderly African Americans drawn to his cause by his soulful delivery and Pentecostal preaching style, including at times speaking in tongues.

“When I say, I am God, then I feel [faith] well up within my soul. And I see it well up in you, and I see the sick healed, and the blind see, and the dead raised . . . . You wanna know how I feel, I never feel so good as when I say I am God,” he shouted in a full-throated roar in a 1972 sermon.

Jones further enraptured crowds with faith healings – laying hands on disabled or sick people who would miraculously be cured of any ailments. Though insiders later revealed that these healings were staged, Jones’ mastery of word and presentation left few in attendance with any doubts about his abilities.

Socialism trap

He also indoctrinated many young, idealistic liberal white people in progressive 1970s California with the themes of socialism, equality and political activism. And he justified his brand of socialism with the Bible for those recruited from more conservative religious factions, who might have found such left-wing ideas tough to swallow.

Socialism, he said, is “older than the Bible by far”.

But by the time Jones and many of his followers completed a lengthy relocation from California to Jonestown in Guyana in 1977, he had begun to change as a speaker. His trademark passionate delivery gave way to blind fury and incredible rage.

“I been tired for 25 years,” the 47-year-old Jones preached in 1978, his voice rising steadily in pitched anger. “I’m tired of looking at people’s faces that don’t give a f*** for 25 years, I watch and they don’t give a g******. You can lay it out in front of them, and they will not listen. They will not read.

They will not do anything, and that’s why I have to suffer every day and all night and all through the hours, because I will have nobody but a few that will carry the burden with me. Because you hide yourself away in ignorance.”

His rages created a fear that cemented the hold he had on his followers.

He also used a “divide and conquer” method among his followers.

“What Jones did was try to break all ties that were not to him,” said former believer Vernon Gosney. “Transfer all that loyalty, all that bonding to him. And so families were broken apart. Relationships were divided.”

Such divisions caused family members to spy and report on one another, or friends to turn in friends for various transgressions.

Jones furthered the poisonous atmosphere among his followers by encouraging physical fighting to either solve problems or administer punishment. Audiotapes of such sessions reveal Jones laughing, apparently entertained.

Jones’ mastery of the spoken word also enabled his many sexual exploits with both female and male followers. Jones deftly justified his actions to his followers by saying that what he did to them was actually for their own benefit, or the benefit of making the church a stronger, more close-knit organisation.

He preached that many of his male followers were in denial about their homosexuality, conditioning those followers to accept him if he approached with a sexual advance.

‘Great sacrifice’

And he defused any accusations of sexual perversion on his part by claiming that he gained no personal pleasure from his acts, which he called a “great sacrifice”.

“And if the leader is attracted to you, then somehow that cultivates,” Jones said during a temple meeting in 1978. “Well, you ought to know I’m attracted to you, I’m ready to die for every one of you, so that means I’m attracted to you. You follow what I’m saying? I’m attracted to all of you. How much more attraction can you have than to be ready to have your eyes plucked out?”

By the end at Jonestown, Jones was more rock star than preacher. His sermons and remarks at meetings were littered with obscenities. He regularly had sex with his followers and he abused drugs. By the last month of Jonestown’s existence, Jones was so intoxicated at times that he had great difficulty even reading the news aloud to his followers.

As the end drew near, Jones’ tone as a speaker took darker turns. He constantly fed his followers in Guyana a steady diet of fatalism.

“I said, life is a f****** disease,” he said. “It’s worse than cancer. It’s a disease. And there’s only one cure for the sonofabitchin’ disease. That’s death. And socialists can only take one form of death. What is it? Fight a goddamn war, or revolutionary suicide.

If you don’t believe life’s a disease, then you’re dumb. Very dumb.”

Spurred on by their leader’s talk, People’s Temple members were ready to follow Jones even into death. At his request, they even wrote personal notes to him expressing their willingness to die for their cause.

This was the ultimate test of loyalty, and the absolute testimony to the power of his words. As history shows, Jim Jones the orator was chillingly effective.
